Intersectional Identity

Imagines a place... where Buffalo State students wear their layered identities like a badge of honor, in full, radiant pride.

The 2025 RUNWAY fashion show challenges designers to explore and express their "Intersectional Identity," reflecting the complex and interconnected nature of identity through fashion. This focus draws inspiration from the concept of intersectionality, a term originally coined by Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw in 1989 and rooted in Black feminist activism.

"Intersectional Identity" invites designers to delve into the layers of identity shaped by multiple social categories, including race, gender, sexuality, ability, class, and culture. Through their designs, participants will examine how these identities intersect within systems and structures of power, influencing their lived experiences. This focus encourages the creation of garments that not only celebrate diversity and individuality but also challenge traditional narratives, offering new perspectives on how fashion can represent and empower those at the intersections of various identities.

Runway aims to spark a broader conversation about inclusivity, diversity, and social justice within the fashion industry. Designers will use their collections to tell stories of resilience and empowerment, shedding light on the unique challenges they face. This focus highlights the transformative potential of fashion as a tool for advocacy and change, where every identity is not only recognized but celebrated at Buffalo State University.
